Cracking Crime: The Shining Girls by Lauren Beukes
The Shining Girls by Lauren Beukes
And now for something completely different!
About the Book
A time-traveling serial killer is impossible to trace – until one of his victims survives.
In Depression-era Chicago, Harper Curtis finds a key to a house that opens on to other times. But it comes at a cost. He has to kill the shining girls: bright young women, burning with potential. He stalks them through their lives across different eras, leaving anachronistic clues on their bodies, until, in 1989, one of his victims, Kirby Mazrachi, survives and starts hunting him back.
It’s Dead Good because…
Not only is the cover of Lauren Beukes’s The Shining Girls completely striking but the contents are too. The prospects of a time travelling serial killer are just too mind-bending to fully comprehend but Beukes takes the concept and runs with it – to a very scary place!
Her characterisation is wonderful, deft and detailed. We particularly loved the fiesty and independent Kirby who lives to fight another day. Another stand out for us was the brilliant descriptions of 1930s Chicago, there’s so much atmosphere in this book!
