Cracking Crime: Watson’s Choice by Gladys Mitchell

Watson’s Choice by Gladys Mitchell

Indulge in this utterly charming tale of Mrs Bradley and her eccentricities.

About the Book

One of Sir Bohun Chantrey’s great passions in life is the stories of Sherlock Holmes. To celebrate the great man’s anniversary, he throws a party at which the guests are instructed to come as characters from the detective stories. But several of the guests are more interested in Sir Bohun’s money, and when he announces that he is to marry a poor governess, things take a turn for the worse, not least when the Hound of the Baskervilles turns up…

Fortunately the incomparable detective Mrs Bradley and her secretary Laura are amongst the guests and ready to investigate the deepening mystery.

It’s Dead Good because…

If you are a fan of vintage cosy crime this is the book for you. Labelling this cosy doesn’t take away the cleverness that infuses Mrs Bradley and Gladys Mitchell’s carefully plotted tale. Mrs Bradley’s secretary Laura is an equally direct creation, the perfect foil to the older ladies mystique.

Sherlock Holmes aficionado’s will find plenty to marvel on here. The level of Sherlockian detail Mitchell goes into is quite outstanding. You need to keep your eyes peeled for clues throughout and the denouement has a satisfying mix of logic and motive from the baser of human emotions!
