First Look: The Secret Agent

The Secret Agent is a new three-part BBC spy thriller starring Toby Jones (The Girl, Midsomer Murders) and Vicky McClure (Line of Duty, This Is England), adapted from the classic novel by Joseph Conrad.

London, 1886. Verloc (Toby Jones) runs a seedy shop in the heart of London’s Soho. Unknown to his loyal wife Winnie (Vicky McClure) Verloc is paid by the Russian embassy to spy on a dangerous anarchist cell.

The Secret Agent by Joseph ConradFurious that Britain tolerates violent extremists, the Russians want Verloc to orchestrate a bombing that can be blamed on the anarchists and trigger a government crackdown. Caught between the Russians and the British police, Verloc drags his unsuspecting family into a tragic terror plot.

Further cast includes Stephen Graham (Pirates Of The Caribbean, Boardwalk Empire, This Is England) as Verloc’s adversary Chief Inspector Heat and Ian Hart (Boardwalk Empire, The Driver) as the dangerously unpredictable Professor. Tom Goodman-Hill (Humans, Mr Selfridge) will play Inspector Heat’s boss, Assistant Commissioner Stone, and David Dawson (Ripper Street, Peaky Blinders) plays Verloc’s Russian handler, Vladimir. The anarchists include Tom Vaughan-Lawlor (Love/Hate, Becoming Jane) as Michaelis and Raphael Acloque (The Ivory Year, Pushaway) as Ossipon.

Toby Jones said, “I am both excited and intrigued by the challenge of playing Verloc, the eponymous hero of Conrad’s startlingly relevant novel The Secret Agent.” Vicky McClure added, “I’m so excited to play the part of Winnie. It’s an incredible script. And delighted to work with Toby Jones – I’ve always been a huge fan of his.”

The drama is adapted for the screen by Tony Marchant (The Mark Of Cain, Garrow’s Law), produced by Line Of Duty‘s World Productions for BBC One and directed by Charles McDougall (Hillsborough, Queer As Folk, The Good Wife).

The first episode of The Secret Agent will air on BBC One at 9pm Sunday 17th July. We can’t wait!
