Book awards are wonderful things. It’s brilliant to see a book you’ve read and loved receive the critical acclaim that it deserves, which is why I’m thrilled that Terry Hayes’s début novel I Am Pilgrim has just been announced as the Crime/Thriller Book of the Year at the National Book Awards.

Fighting off stiff competition from Lee Child, Anthony Horowitz, Sophie Hannah and Robert Galbraith it is a testament to the brilliance of this book that a début author has scooped the award from some of the biggest crime names writing today.

The National Book Awards said: ‘The Day of the Jackal meets Homeland with a dash of Bourne – a début thriller to take your breath away.’
