As the clocks go forward and the days are that little bit brighter, we take a look at some of the crime drama highlights heading our way in spring 2016.
The Night Manager has kicked off the year in spectacular fashion with Tom Hiddleston now hotly tipped to be the next James Bond. We’re halfway through series 2 of Grantchester, have mourned the end of Happy Valley series 2 and will soon see Thirteen come to an end.
But never fear – there are some gems on the horizon, let’s take a look…
Spring crime drama 2016
ITV 1, 28th March
Stylish, atmospheric and with a brilliant star at it’s head, finally we welcome Georges Simenon’s Inspector Maigret back to our screens. Rowan Atkinson takes the lead role and never was there a better casting decision. Despite having one of the most expressive faces in entertainment, Atkinson dials this down and plays the French Chief Inspector with resigned aplomb. There will be two Maigret specials in 2016 – each two hours long. Well worth a watch.
Peaky Blinders series 3
BBC Two, April (date tbc)
Gangster epic Peaky Blinders returns this spring, opening on Tommy Shelby’s wedding day – but things are not as rosy as they seem. The third season sees Tommy pulled into the glamorous and dangerous world of international intrigue in 1920s Britain, putting his entire organisation and family at risk, and forcing him to question everything about his own ambitions and desires.
Sky One, 15th April
From the pen of Harlan Coben comes a new, original ten-part drama. The Five follows a group of friends united by a terrible incident. Haunted by the disappearance of one of their younger brothers, the group is forced to revisit the past when the missing boy’s DNA turns up at the scene of a murder. This is Coben’s first story written for television and we couldn’t be more excited!
ITV 1, 4th April
A new eight part drama starring Anna Friel heads to our screens this April. Original multi-stranded crime drama Marcella, written by internationally renowned screenwriter and novelist Hans Rosenfeldt (the man behind The Bridge) stars Friel in the lead role as DS Marcella Backland.
Line of Duty series 3
BBC Two, 24th March
Line Of Duty returns to BBC Two and pits AC-12 against their most dangerous adversary yet. The series opens with the fatal shooting of a criminal suspect by an armed response unit led by Sergeant Danny Waldron. Danny and his team claim they acted in self-defence, but AC-12, led by Superintendent Ted Hastings, gather evidence that suggests that this was a deliberate killing.
Scott & Bailey series 5
ITV 1, date tbc
In a new, three-part special of Scott & Bailey, we see a game of ruthless life or death daring develop as the duo investigate multiple killers with horrifying and everlasting consequences. Both officers will be changed forever and the investigation will take a devastating toll on their private, professional and personal lives.
