First Look: Mortdecai

The original Mortdecai books – namely Don’t Point That Thing At Me, After You With The Pistol, Something Nasty In The Woodshed and The Great Mortdecai Moustache Mystery – aren’t your regular thrillers.

Written by the gloriously named and beautifully eccentric Kyril Bonfiglioli, the much-loved cult novels centre on aristo art dealer and well-spoken vagabond Charlie Mortdecai and his Scottish manservant Jock as they fart about the globe, get into scrapes and call people out on their pronunciation of Moët. Essentially plot-free and big-time bonkers, it makes sense that die-hard The Fast Show fan Johnny Depp is playing our boy Charlie in the upcoming how-the-hell-did-this-get-made? comedy, out January 23 in the UK.

Making it all the more “What the…?”-worthy are the supporting cast, including Jeff Goldblum, Ewan McGregor, Olivia Munn and Gwyneth Paltrow, who were all obviously attracted the the script from director David Keopp (who wrote Jurassic Park, amongst others).

The trailers so far have focused on the farce and lacked the high-falutin’ wordplay Mortdecai’s snobbish comedy requires, but it’s important to have faith. That, and drink a good bottle of Châteauneuf-du-Pape before you watch it, because, well, why not, what?
