A Cunning Disguise: Crimefest
Dead Good sent roving reporter Katy Loftus into the melee at Bristol Crimefest to report back on this season’s author chic!
You could easily assume that those in the publishing world would be a shabbily dressed lot – penniless idealists that either never leave the house (in the case of writers) or literary snobs who consider corduroy jackets the epitome of style. By extension, you could assume that the dress sense of those who work in the world of crime writing would be even worse, with their minds in the gutters and their hands tucked into dirty macs. And you may be partially right. But at Bristol Crimefest last weekend I found a few trendsetters who were willing to break the boundaries of the all-black look and make a statement.

- Agent Stan of Jenny Brown Associates shows us how to work the Scottish version of the classic blazer-jeans-converse look (just add a pint of Guinness.)

- Crime writer David Mark goes for a cool country-meets-city vibe with a floral shirt underneath a customised waistcoat, finished with a natty flat cap and some leather accessories. Pimms, anyone?

- Sarah Pinborough, thriller, fantasy and YA author, rocks a sexy festival look that’s come straight from Glastonbury. Ripped jeans, sunglasses and a glass of wine (the cigarette isn’t real, but you can still tell this lady knows how to party.)

- Author Penny Hancock shows us how to strut with the perfect day-to-night combo: knee-length printed dress, cute cardi, sexy velvet heels and an oh-so-chic chignon.

- Publicist Sam Eades of Headline Publishing brings a whole new look to town. We’re calling it modern Victorian! She wears a very cute printed cotton dress, lace-up ankle boots and a cheeky grin.

- Those publicists do know how to dress! Veronique Norton, also of Headline Publishing, is casually chic in an LBD, oversized camel blazer and comfy-but-cool flats. She can run around after misbehaving authors all day long in that outfit!

- Espionage thriller author Chris Morgan Jones does the silver fox myth justice. Casual but assured in distressed Converse, dark blazer and jeans, and thin-rimmed glasses.
