There are now 30 books in Lee Child’s bestselling Jack Reacher series, and the author shows no signs of slowing down. Exit Strategy, the latest Jack Reacher book, came out in November 2025, almost three decades since the first book in the series, Killing Floor, introduced our favourite hero.
Jack Reacher is a dangerous and unattainable lone ranger who used to be a special investigator in the military but now travels around America, solving crimes and unveiling conspiracies. These books are standalone and can be read in any order, with the exception of four books that form a sub-series, starting with 61 Hours then continuing in Worth Dying For, A Wanted Man and finally Never Go Back, as Reacher tries to return to his old base in Virginia.
If you’re brand-new to Lee Child’s Jack Reacher series, his first book Killing Floor is a great place to start, or you could begin with his most popular books Bad Luck and Trouble or Persuader, both of which inspired separate Reacher TV series. For the latest TV adaptation, here is our first look on the adaptation of Child’s 13th book in the Reacher series, Gone Tomorrow .
However, if you want to read the books chronologically, here are the Jack Reacher books in order by publication.
Lee Child’s Jack Reacher books in order:
1. Killing Floor (1997)
The first book in the Jack Reacher series sees our hero jump off a bus on a whim and walk down a country road into Margrave, Georgia. Coincidentally, the day he walks through is the day the town witnesses its first homicide in 30 years. As the only stranger in the area, Reacher is the prime suspect. But, as the body count rises, Reacher hunts for those truly responsible – and dishes out his own form of justice.
We suspect you’ll love it because the book is fast paced, with an action-packed plot and a memorable hero with a strong moral code.
2. Die Trying (1998)
Reacher sees a young woman struggling on crutches and offers her an arm of support. But as they hobble along, he’s stopped in his tracks by a stranger pointing a gun at his stomach. He and the woman (who, it turns out, is part of the FBI) are bundled into a van and taken to a remote part of America. But can they keep their wits about them and escape?
We suspect you’ll love it because the stakes feel even higher than in Killing Floor, with a high-concept premise and escalating tension.
3. Tripwire (1999)
Jack Reacher is trying to stay invisible: by day, he digs swimming pools; by night, he’s a bouncer at a strip club in the Florida Keys. But his life of anonymity is disrupted by the arrival of a private investigator, who has been sent to find him. Then Reacher finds the PI’s body: he has been beaten to death, with his fingernails sliced off. Who would kill him, and who sent him in the first place? Reacher travels north to find out…
We suspect you’ll love it because this book shows another, more vulnerable side to Reacher, with a slow-burn mystery at its core.
4. The Visitor (2000)
Two women who were high up in the army are found dead in their respective bathtubs. All signs point to the killer being an army man and, given Jack Reacher knew both women before they were forced to resign from the service, he is a prime suspect. But who is the real killer, and what was their motive?
We suspect you’ll love it because it’s a serial killer mystery with a unique premise and an unsettling atmosphere.
Title changed to Running Blind in the US.
5. Echo Burning (2001)
While hitchhiking in the Texan desert, Jack Reacher is picked up by the beautiful and rich Carmen who is in a unique predicament: her husband is in jail but, when he comes out, he plans to kill her. Her family is hostile, the police are uncooperative, and her lawyers won’t help either. Luckily, Reacher never backs down from a fight…
We suspect you’ll love it because the story has a strong sense of setting, in the claustrophobically hot Texan desert, and Reacher again uses his brains and brawn for good.
6. Without Fail (2002)
Jack Reacher is back on the road, embracing his solitude, until a woman tracks him down. She has one of the most important jobs in the country, protecting the Vice-President of the United States, and she asks Reacher for help because someone wants her boss dead. Once again, Reacher will have to use his particular set of skills to save the day.
We suspect you’ll love it because the shift into presidential security feels high-stakes and exciting, and the book features fan-favourite characters like Frances Neagley.
7. Persuader (2003)
Reacher has unofficially partnered with DEA agent Susan Duffy to bring down suspected drugs smuggler Zachary Beck, infiltrating the household by posing as a bodyguard. But as he gets entangled in the family dynamics, Reacher must decide how far he’s willing to go to administer justice. Persuader was the inspiration for the third season of Reacher on Amazon Prime Video.
We suspect you’ll love it because the first-person narration heightens the tension, the undercover plot adds suspense, and it features one of the series’ most formidable villains.
8. The Enemy (2004)
In a seedy motel in North Carolina, a two-star general is found murdered, his briefcase stolen. Hundreds of miles away, the general’s wife is killed too. The year is 1990, and Reacher is still a devoted member of the army, ready to follow orders to control the situation. But as the bodies start to pile up, and suspicion falls on him, Reacher investigates and unearths a shocking conspiracy.
We suspect you’ll love it because it gives you a deeper understanding of Reacher’s backstory in the army and its Cold War setting gives it an extra sense of intrigue.
9. One Shot (2005)
A gunman unleashes havoc on a bustling city, shooting five people dead. When he’s arrested, he refuses to talk to anyone but Jack Reacher, who has been living off-grid. Reacher knew the gunman from his time in the military, but why would he request to have him by his side? As Reacher investigates, and teams up with a young defence lawyer, he finds this case is far from easy…
We suspect you’ll love it because One Shot inspired the 2012 film Jack Reacher, starring Tom Cruise and Rosamund Pike, and the book is just as cinematic and pacy.
10. The Hard Way (2006)
Sitting in a coffee shop, Reacher unknowingly witnesses a man driving off in a car containing ransom money. The next day, he’s approached by Edward Lane: a powerful man who hires him to find his wife and stepdaughter who have been kidnapped. But as Reacher investigates, he learns this isn’t the first time one of Lane’s partners has been kidnapped – and last time the story ended in murder…
We suspect you’ll love it because there’s an emotionally charged mystery at its heart but also a ton of plot twists that keep you guessing throughout.
11. Bad Luck and Trouble (2007)
Reacher thought he was untraceable. But when a member of his old Army unit finds a way to contact him, he knows she must be in trouble. Frances Neagley informs him that a member of their elite Special Investigators team has been found dead – and six others are missing. Reacher’s old friends are in trouble, and it’s up to him to save them. This is the eleventh book in the Reacher series, and it was the basis for Reacher season 2 on Amazon Prime TV.
We suspect you’ll love it because you get to see Reacher reunited with his old team of Special Investigators, and their camaraderie is one of the highlights of the series. Also, the fast-paced, mission-based plot makes it an addictive read.
12. Nothing To Lose (2008)
While walking through a small Colorado town, Reacher is harassed by the local sheriff, accused of vagrancy and forced to leave. Intrigued by the small town’s paranoia towards outsiders, Reacher sneaks back in to figure out what the locals are hiding – and uncovers corruption and conspiracy with potentially lethal consequences.
We suspect you’ll love it because the remote, isolated town gives a strong sense of place, and the town’s big secret is particularly intriguing.
13. Gone Tomorrow (2009)
On a subway train in New York City, Reacher eyes a woman whose behaviour matches all 12 of the tell-tale signs of a suicide bomber. Will Reacher intervene and save lives, or will his intervention cause even wider repercussions? You’ll have to read it – or tune in to season 4 of the Reacher TV series – to find out…
We suspect you’ll love it because it’s a gripping premise – one of the best in the series – and the New York setting gives it even more urgency and pace.
14. 61 Hours (2010)
In a small town in South Dakota, one woman is preparing to testify against a drugs kingpin. But before she can do so, she needs to survive the death threats. That’s where Reacher steps in, offering her protection and hunting down the people responsible for terrorising the town.
We suspect you’ll love it because the book has a unique structure, with a ticking clock ramping up the tension throughout.
15. Worth Dying For (2010)
While most Reacher novels are standalone stories, Worth Dying For follows on directly from 61 Hours which, uncharacteristically, ends on a cliffhanger. In this sequel, Reacher stumbles across another crime family, the Duncans, who have an entire county in a terrified chokehold. Reacher intervenes, drawn in by the mystery of a missing 8-year-old, and learns some cases are worth dying for.
We suspect you’ll love it because the book’s gritty tone, disturbing villains and clear moral conflict makes this a great sequel to 61 Hours.
16. The Affair (2011)
This novel is a flashback to six months before the events of Killing Floor, where Reacher is still a Major in the US Military Police. When a woman is killed behind a bar in Mississippi, close to an army base, Reacher must work out if the culprit was a military man. The local sheriff, herself a former US Marine, seems to have her own motives, so Reacher will have to solve this one on his own…
We suspect you’ll love it because it gives you more of an insight into Reacher’s backstory, with a blend of personal and political stakes.
17. A Wanted Man (2012)
In this follow-up novel to Worth Dying For, Reacher is wandering the streets, trying to hitchhike, when three strangers offer him a ride. But while in their car, he realises the three are lying to him – they have inconsistent stories about who they are and where they’re going – and when he hears the police are looking for three strangers, he suspects he’s in a getaway car.
We suspect you’ll love it because the confined setting ramps up the tension, and you gradually piece together the clues through subtle clues like dialogue.
18. Never Go Back (2013)
In this sequel to A Wanted Man – the final book in the mini sub-series – Reacher finally makes it to Virginia, but the woman he was searching for, Major Susan Turner, has been arrested. Meanwhile, he’s in trouble with the law himself as he’s being framed for a 16-year-old homicide and paternity suit. As he pairs up with Major Turner, the pair uncover a conspiracy bigger than either of them could have imagined.
We suspect you’ll love it because it gives you another glimpse into Reacher’s relationships within the military, and introduces the capable Major Turner, who has a prickly but entertaining dynamic with Reacher.

19. Personal (2014)
A sniper has taken a shot at the French president, and only one man could be responsible. Luckily, Reacher knows the culprit – and he’s the only one who can track him down. Using his background in the US military police, Reacher comes out of the shadows to serve his own version of justice.
We suspect you’ll love it because of its international setting, taking place outside of the US for a change, and its strong pacing and procedural elements.
20. Make Me (2015)
On a one-night stop-over in a remote town, Reacher meets Michelle Chang, a former FBI agent investigating her partner’s disappearance. Pulled into her investigation, and intrigued by a note warning about 200 deaths, Reacher uncovers a sordid criminal operation and works with Chang to bring the sadistic criminals to justice.
We suspect you’ll love it because it features an eerie small-town setting, a disturbing plot, and the unforgettable character Michelle Chang, who has a strong dynamic with Reacher.
21. Night School (2014)
In this novel we are once again transported back to the ‘90s, where Reacher is still working for the military police. Fresh off a secret mission, Reacher has been sent on a new assignment, teaming up with a CIA analyst and FBI agent to find an American who is willing to pay a hundred million dollars for a mysterious package that could cause untold destruction.
We suspect you’ll love it because you get another flashback to Reacher’s storied military career, with a more espionage-focused plot adding extra intrigue to this multi-layered mystery.
22. The Midnight Line (2017)
Reacher sees a ring in a pawn shop that he recognises as belonging to a former West Point classmate. He remembers how much the ring meant to her and knows she would never have voluntarily given it up. Curious, he decides to track her down, to ensure she’s safe – but he encounters violent gangs, crooks and police officers along the way.
We suspect you’ll love it because a small clue holds the key to a bigger mystery, and the plot feels like a quest but with greater emotional stakes.
23. Past Tense (2018)
A young couple staying in a motel are trapped in a high-stakes game of life and death. Meanwhile, Reacher visits a town where his father grew up but is told nobody named Reacher ever lived there. Who is lying, and how is this mystery linked to the young couple? Reacher is about to find out…
We suspect you’ll love it because there’s a dual narrative structure, with alternating storylines ramping up the tension and adding to the suspenseful atmosphere. We also enjoyed getting more of a glimpse into Reacher’s upbringing and his relationship with his father.
Read the first three chapters of Past Tense here!
24. Blue Moon (2019)
An elderly man falls asleep on a Greyhound bus, his bag left open and a wad of cash visible to onlookers. When a man tries to steal the money, Reacher steps in. But when he gets off the bus, the old man refuses Reacher’s offer to escort him home: he is clearly scared and, as he is somehow involved with two rival gangs, Reacher realises he has every right to be.
We suspect you’ll love it because this is a return to Child’s more action-packed, fast-paced storytelling, with high stakes and an even higher body count.
25. The Sentinel (2020)
The Sentinel is the first book that Lee Child co-authored with his younger brother, Andrew Child. It’s set in a small town in Tennessee that has been shut down by a cyber-attack. Local IT expert Rusty Rutherford is assumed to be responsible, and Jack Reacher steps in to stop him from being kidnapped. He hunts down the real culprit and unveils a conspiracy.
We suspect you’ll love it because the tech-focused attack feels timely and relevant, and it’s a fast-paced read you’ll race to finish.
26. Better Off Dead (2021)
In a town near the Arizona-Mexico border, Reacher teams up with FBI agent Michaela Fenton, who is concerned about her twin brother’s involvement in organised crime. As the pair hunt for the leader of the operation, they find the small town is keeping a big secret.
We suspect you’ll love it because this is a return to Reacher going undercover, as he did in Persuader, which adds to the momentum and sense of danger.
27. No Plan B (2022)
Gerrardsville, Colorado. A woman is hit by a bus, her death ruled a suicide. But Reacher was at the scene of the crime, and he saw a stranger push her in front of the bus, then steal her bag. He pursues the killer on foot and gradually uncovers corruption in a local institution and powerful people on the take.
We suspect you’ll love it because it’s an action-packed story, with well-timed reveals that keep you hooked.
28. The Secret (2023)
This novel takes you back to 1992, where Reacher is still a loyal investigator in the Army. When a man falls from a hospital window, the Secretary of Defence assembles a task force to investigate, with Reacher serving as the Army’s representative. As Reacher tracks down the killer, he unveils a decades-old secret and learns who among his new colleagues he can trust.
We suspect you’ll love it because it sees Reacher working in a team (which is rare!), and the methodical investigation is particularly satisfying
29. In Too Deep (2024)
Reacher hitches a ride with a stranger, but the pair end up in a car crash. The next thing he knows, he wakes up alone, handcuffed to a bed, and with no recollection of where he is or how he got there. In true Reacher fashion, our hero must escape captivity and bring those responsible to justice.
We suspect you’ll love it because there’s a high-stakes, tightly focused plot with a sense of urgency as Reacher is himself in danger.
30. Exit Strategy (2025)
While at a coffee shop in Baltimore, Reacher doesn’t notice someone slipping him a note. It’s a cryptic plea for help and Reacher can’t help but intervene, tracking down the person who wrote it and protecting them from a powerful local who is exploiting people for profit.
We suspect you’ll love it because its compact but fast-paced plot means you could easily read it in one weekend.
Plus…
Reacher: The Stories Behind the Stories (2025)
Who is the man behind Jack Reacher? In this collection of personal essays, Lee Child writes about the inspiration behind his hero, sharing stories of the fans he’s met, the cities he’s written about, and how the internet changed everything. Read an extract of Reacher: The Stories Behind the Stories.
We suspect you’ll love it because it gives additional context to the Reacher stories, making your reading experience that much richer, and it gives a glimpse of the beloved author’s process.
No Middle Name (2017)
In this collection of short stories, collated in one book for the first time, Child sheds more light on Reacher’s past, illuminating how his background shaped his future as a lone wolf who avenges the wronged. The 12 stories are compulsively readable and a must-read for Reacher fans.
We suspect you’ll love it because of the variety of Reacher stories, each like a snapshot in time that gives further insight into Reacher’s character.

Looking for book featuring jack reachers son. Really liked it. Would love to see another one. Can’t remember the name of it
Always enjoyed Lee Child’s books…..until Make Me. I found it so gory that I have crossed Mr. Child off my “favorite authors” list and have vowed to never read another.
because of one book, he went from great to never again, wow!!! A little extreme there….
I agree that is a bit extreme. I did not care for Make Me either. But the books after that are good. I wouldn’t cross him off because of one book. Everyone one has at least one that people will not like.
you left out Running Blind. Should come between Tripwire and Echo Burning
Running Blind is the U.S version. The Visitor is the U.K version. I just found that out.
Hello!
This is The Visitor – the book was given a different title in the US.
The Dead Good team
Best writer ever. Can’t wait for the next one. Don’t like Tom Cruise in the role, too short and too old and too pretty
Always await the next Jack Reacher with anticipation. My favourite holiday read.
We go away this Saturday with no Jack Reacher how can that ba a holiday
