Looking for Lee Child’s Jack Reacher books in order? Never fear – we’re here to help!
A series of books can be a daunting prospect. Do you have to begin at the beginning? Which book is the first one? Which book is the best one? Are there sub-plots or sub-series to tap into first? The questions are many and the answers are not always straightforward, but we’re here to help bring some clarity to this confusion.
There are now 28 books in Lee Child’s highly successful Jack Reacher series, with his new novel, The Secret heading our way this October – plus one short story collection. In the first thriller we’re introduced to Jack Reacher, a dangerous and unattainable lone ranger who used to be in the military. The series follows his exploits all across America and occasionally into other countries.
There are four books that form a sub-series starting off with 61 Hours then continuing in Worth Dying For, A Wanted Man and finally Never Go Back. They follow Reacher as he’s trying to get to Virginia to return to his old base and a woman’s voice.
The first book in Lee Child’s series, Killing Floor, is so good it seems a shame not to start there, but this is a series you can dip into at different stages because there’s always one constant – our hero himself. Here are the Jack Reacher books in order.

Jack Reacher jumps off a bus and walks fourteen miles down a country road into Margrave, Georgia. An arbitrary decision he’s about to regret.
Reacher is the only stranger in town on the day they have had their first homicide in thirty years.The cops arrest Reacher and the police chief turns eyewitness to place him at the scene. As nasty secrets leak out, and the body count mounts, one thing is for sure: they picked the wrong guy to take the fall.
Die Trying by Lee Child
2. Die Trying (1998)
Jack Reacher, alone, strolling nowhere. A Chicago street in bright sunshine. A young woman, struggling on crutches. He offers her a steadying arm. And turns to see a handgun aimed at his stomach.

I’ve just listened to ‘Past tense’ on audiobook driving through coast and countryside – my very first Jack Reacher – and I’m a little obsessed.
Desperately need to reach out to Reacher again. I’m having withdrawal symptoms already. Adored Scott Bricks voice, narrating.

I have read all and can’t wait for the release of The Secret in October. Hopefully the next series on tv will be out this year also. Solid release from dull living.
Read them all except No Plan B, but Christmas is coming & it will fit nicely into any Christmas sock (space reserved in mine!). So what if the stories are formulaic – they are still a good escapist read and that is the most important point – gets you away from life’s troubles. Let Jack handle them!
I am ashamed to admit that I have read all the Jack Reacher books as I don’t usually read this type of book at all. I skip through all the violent bits as they are repetitive and rather ridiculous and the fact that he is virtually a vagrant yet the number of women who find him hard to resist is hard to swallow. However, I am completely hooked! It is the clever plot lines and the way Reacher works it all out that does it!
I’m not a big reader and have only read all of Andy mc Nabs Nick stone books. And all all of Lee Child’s Jack Reacher books..
If anyone can suggest any books similar to these it would be appreciated.
Best to read not in the order listed above but in order of time. Will make more sense. Characters in other books are mentioned and family throughout.

After mentioning that I liked the movies, was told it’s rubbish compared to the books. This I now know is true.
Netflix series is so much better. Can’t wait for series 2. Not a little man but a big man. Also much closer to the story line. At times even better.
Yes some are predictable
Yes some are silly like sucking fuel in a flexible hose from 100 meters down that can’t be done, and the tank would have been built on the surface. That annoyed me, but overall the only books I read. But next time will read them all in order.

I have a love/hate relationship with Lee Child’s / Reacher books, once I start one can’t put it down. I like the short chapters and your bad/good charter in Reacher. Lee Child is the only man who keeps me up at nite since my husband passed away. Thank you for my many hours or pleasure. If Jack No middle name Reacher has an older brother send him my way. I have read 9 and took down the names of rest of the Reacher series and will continue to enjoy every minute.
Started the Reacher series 9 months ago, up to A WANTED MAN, all following books ordered, always find a very interesting read with lots of additional information. The films, if you hadn’t read a book then Tom Cruise did a decent job, having seen the tv series Alan Ritchson is the perfect fit. Will probably re-read using Google maps to follow the plots. I am a great Jack Reacher fan and have read all the books and will, no doubt, read them all again.
I have just finished “Better Off Dead”, in a Punguin paperback edition, and, at the back of that volume, is a note that promises a list of these novels in the order of Jack Reacher’s progress – a chronological order of events – available on your website. I have tried all the pages and all I can find is the order of publication. I have enjoyed these books immensely and have realised that there is a logical order but this becomes difficult to follow at times. I intend to read these stories again, starting with “No Middle Name”, as this seems to be a good starting point, but then what?
If you have promised a list of titles in chronological order, as indicated in the Penguin edition, please supply it – this would make so much more sense.
I have also been following the “Women’s Murder Club” series by James Patterson and, fortunately, each story follows on from the previous one and it is fairly easy to keep up with the changes.
Please honour your promise, if that is what it is, in the Penguin edition, to publish the “biography” of Jack Reacher so that I can re-read these stories in a logical order – picked at randon, how would I know why Reacher enters a story with a broken nose?

Read all the books and loved them, great character development. I thought Tom Cruise did a fine job in the movies, he may not be 6′ 6″ but he can act. As for Alan Ritchson in Prime’s Reacher, not for me, he is far to buffed for my minds view of Reacher, always looks like he just left the gym having stashed his roids, Reacher in the books walks a lot and hardly has a healthy diet so would be much leaner imo.
I have read all of Lee Child’s books and have now started rereading them.
I can also recommend his brother, Andrew Child’s books. Another writer I enjoy is Michael Connelly.
Well I am I suppose a Reacher addict, I now have all his books and both movies, the movie were the catalyst in getting into the series.
They selected the wrong person to portray Reacher considering Tom Cruise is 5 foot and Reacher is 6foot 6six behemoth.
However the selection was made due to box office appeal and big dollars were made including sucking me into the series well done.
This I believe puts Lee Childs into the multiple series club with Cussler, Dale Brown, Mathew Rielly, and other such authors,
What would be a good thing is to have at least 2 or even three books a year as us reacher junkies are always sweating out on the release of the next book

I have read all 26 books and luv them, though Tom Cruise did an ok job, he’s just not big enough. But just watched the 1st season of Reacher on Prime and Alan Ritchson was brilliant exactly like the character in the books , silent, fast and brutal. Can’t wait for more seasons, think they are on a winner with him as the lead actor.
Cruise did an amazing job in both Movies. Represented the character much better than most give him credit for. But, the new show looks promising.
I have all the audio books of the the Jack Reacher series on audiobook and have listened to them all. They are all good, every Lee Child book has a certain plot twist you didn’t see coming. I heard a couple reviewers say negative stuff about a couple of books before I listened to them. I listened and totally disagreed. Each book was gripping and compelling each story left you rooting for Reacher. I recommend these books if you like the good guy that kicks butt, Go through them all. I’m on my second time through them.
brilliant gripping stories and no acronyms they drive me crazy and is the reason I can’t read books from certain authors I have read every book and have started around again. im like a puppy waiting at the letterbox for the postman. please write faster .And definitely more films ( maybe Dwayne Johnson to play reacher)

I’m sure Alan Ritchson will do a much better job but at 6’2″ he is still not the right size!
I’ve been a Jack Reacher fan for years, I too have read every book and can’t wait for the next one to be released. My wife buys me the latest book for a Christmas present every year for the last few years. I’ve read that Tom Cruise purchased the Movie rights for the Reacher series from Lee Child. So I am pretty sure Tom Cruise will be in the Jack Reacher role for the foreseeable future. I know it’s hard to imagine Tom Cruise as 6’4” and 250 lbs., but it is what is. I enjoyed both movies, movie scripts surprisingly close to the books, so that is a plus.
Have them all upto #26 and read them from book #1 to the end several times. Last couple of books Reacher gets a bit rougher which seems a bit out of character for him. Great reading every time you pick them up.
Love Jack Reacher! He has become my favourite hero along with John D McDonald’s Travis McGee. I think they’d have got along really well:-D

As for who should play Reacher, right now. Tom Hardy. Superb actor and can get the American accent. Go Tom.

Can’t wait for one of the stories to be turned in a movie again. But I have to agree with many of you: not with Tom Cruise…! Kenny Johnson would be my choice to play Reacher.

I have just finished reading the Jack Reacher series, after reading the books i found that having Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher does not offer the audience a good representation of who he is
Jack Reacher 200cm plus tall and 250 pound
Tom Cruise 150cm tall and 180 pound
you would have been better off with someone like Keanu reeves more believable
But that still hasn’t detracted from a great series of reading material

are the short story versions going to be released as a full length novel i hope so as soon as you start reading them, it drags you in and you want more, but sadly they suddenly end.

A Question i have is a couple of the books released with different titles, i notice running blind (US) and visitor are the same how many others have been released under a different cover, i would like to know especially as i have all his releases so far ( i hope)
Robert Taylor would make a great Jack Reacher in my opinion. Love the Reacher series and think Taylor would do it justice.
Reacher has been in our home a long time, didn’t think they were my type of read, although my husband thought otherwise. The pandemic happened and I was unable to shop freely so started with Killing Floor went through them all and was able to purchase Sentinel. All absolutely brilliant. Read The Reacher Guy an insight into Lee Child, again a page turning book. Best series I have ever read. Captivated, hook, line and sinker.

Been a massive fan for many years. Tom cruise was too far a jump from the minds eye character to the on screen interpretation. Great books, great stories. Turn you into a chapter munching page turning junkie, you can’t get enough. The only other on par books with the reacher series is Mitch Rapp by the late great Vince Flynn.
Have read and love all the books. Think a Hemsworth would make a great Jack Reacher.

I have read several of the books, and just ordered the first four published, to get them in timeline. I have to disagree on Tom Cruise. If it wasn’t for the British accent, Jason Statham would have been my pick.
Tom cruise was a good choice because he’s small, he’s insignificant, and doesn’t look like he could beat his way out of a paper bag. A Rambo would be totally out of style. I’m former military police and we aren’t all 6ft 6inch

I’ve just discovered the Reacher books and have read 4 books in 6 days, I just can’t put them down. No middle name is crying out to be made into a series of short half hour tv. Lee Child has a writing style that I absolutely love, I’ looking forward to the next onevalready.
Just finished the Sentinel. Loved it. I hope Lee that you will continue writing with your brother Andrew, for all the Jack Reacher addicts out there. I think Joe Mangaliello would be my choice to play Jack Reacher in any future movie or amazon tv series. Tom Cruise although a great actor, Was a total mis-cast as Jack Reacher.

I love the Jack Reacher books and have often gone back to the start to reread them again. It is great to have such a hero who does not have to swear about and at everything, who can take care of the bad guys so well and often with a Sahara dry comment of warning or to finish of his foe. I enjoy the way Reacher thinks and that the reader is part of that narrative. As an Australian I really enjoyed Reacher down under even if it was only a short story. I know a possible child popped up in a book but what about a real child that belonged to either Reacher or his brother Joe, surely the Reacher line will continue. Reacher getting to old and senile is to much to contemplate and a next generation could be good to see, with a little help from Reacher of course!!!!
It has probably been asked before, but how can any sane person endorse that pretty boy, pip squeak to play Reacher ? He could not reach 6’5″ if he climbed a step ladder !

I finished the latest book, The Sentinel, last week, bringing me up to date with all that has been published, including the short stories. Thoroughly enjoyable.
So much so, that over the past few months, I have gone back to the beginning and purchased them again, but this time in audio format. Not a great fan of Dick Hill as a reader, but the story is what it is all about.
I regularly drive 5 or more hours to work here in New Zealand, and so the audio books are a great distraction to the beautiful scenery here!

I was recommended by a Librarian assistant to read Lee Child Reacher. In 2020 I have read the first 24 books. I’m totally hooked. I loved the books I have just noticed there are 2 more I must read them too. Lee Child was bornin Warwickshire so i feel he wrote them for me. I look forward to Lee Child or his brother to write more volumes. I need Jack Reacher in my life.
I spent most of my working life working in a bookshop and used to read a cross section of books , purely for research purposes!!! Lee Child didn’t register until the fifth or sixth book and then not highly mainly as I didn’t like the jackets.
However ,Jack started to grow on me and I began to recommend him to some of our customers and they started coming back for more. I missed a few then started again. Then ,in a lightbulb moment I decided to go back to the beginning and read them in order. Although each book can stand alone reading them in order gives more perspective.
A game we used to play on wet, quiet days was to pick a book and imagine who would play various roles, Tom Cruise never featured.
My Dad has just given me 12 Jack Reacher books as he swears by them. Now, do I buy this missing ones and read in order they were published or should I just grab one and start reading? Any help appreciated, thanks, Pete.
I am an avid Jack Reacher fan and have listened to 24 books and getting ready to start #25. They have gotten me back and forth from Virginia to Oklahoma so many times. I agree Tom Cruise was not the right choice to play Reacher in films need a 6’5″ rugged looking guy. Cruise does not fit the bill. Have listen to just about every book twice they just never get old. This is a brilliant series of books. I love the Jack Reacher series, and Lee Child makes the realism and attention to detail so good it is impossible to put the book down until you finish. By my reckoning I have read 22 of the original Jack Reacher books and short stories by Lee Child. And about 6 of the copycat writers emulating lee Child’s style.
Like all the others, hooked, I have read all the books, many I have read twice and two or three I have read three times, can’t wait for the next one.

I only read the books because my grandson took me to see the film one-shot which I thought was brilliant . Gripping in fact. And contrary to most comments about Tom Cruise I thought he played the part well and would love him to be in the others. Forget his size it was is all about the acting . Anyway regardless of that thank you Lee Child because you made me interested again in what’s on the library shelf.

All of them bar the last three because of living in Spain for the last 14 months so I am about to order them now. When reading them, Lee Child has a way of drawing the reader in so much so it feels as though they are actually there. Love these books so much, love Jack Reacher, please don’t stop. One thing though, if another book is made into a film, please make sure it follows the book and please don’t let Tom Cruise play the part!! Lee Majors would have been perfect…….

I was introduced to the “Jack Reacher” series of books by a mate of mine years ago. Unfortunately it was number 7 or 8 in the series. I was so impressed by Lee Child’s story telling that I decided to start reading the books in order. I have read 16 of the Jack Reacher novels and have just placed a reservation on number 17 at my local library. Keep up the good work Mr. Child. As for the choice of Tom Cruise to play the part of Jack Reacher in the movie versions of the books, I can only shake my head in disbelief at the decision made by the casting director in selecting Tom Cruise. Anyone else would have been a better choice. I think I watched about 5 minutes of the movie before I left in disgust.

19 and counting. Just finished Blue Moon…..the body count was amazing but it all worked out at the end. Reacher shagged another bimbo that liked to experiment. I would like to see Reacher take on some of the illegals that hate America and live off our system….buts that’s probably politically incorrect…so definitely a possibility for Reacher to right another wrong.
I’m on book number 21 at the moment. I have enjoyed this series like no other. These are all exceptional books. Lee childs writing is phenomenal.

That was all it took. I’m hooked. I’ve gone from being a none reader to within a few short months about to start my 8th Jack Reacher novel. I love them. I just wish I had more time to read them.

I agree with the previous postings, Lee Child is as a unique author as is his character Jack Reacher. But in addition to Jack, Mr Child has a great sense of style, descriptive narrative and intense detail of place and action. So not only have I read the complete Reacher series, I reread them. That way I can enjoy all the subtleties I missed in the excitement first time round. Lee Child is one of the rare authors whose stories stand rereading and still grip the heart and mind of the reader

I have read All of them. I love series books. In between times of Reacher, I am having to fill with other series. Currently reading Michael Connelly’s Harry Bosch along with Simon Scarrow’s Eagles of the Empire. First is a detective type the later Roman Empire.

Hi, I just love Child’s style of writing, his gripping plots, non-stop action and the indestructible Jack Reacher. He keeps readers guessing till the end. Most novels have a new plot, new characters and a new setting although rural America dominates in most books. Child has created a super human character who is a Rambo and Sherlock Holmes rolled into one. Every lover of intelligent action books should read Jack Reacher stories.
Read them all , collecting in hardback for my Child’s bookcase. As much as I agree Cruise is short , etc BUT I like the versions of the movies , close to originals and well made…. And Child’s appears in them both… I think I would rather they were well made with authors approval than ignored…. We all agree great stories… Past tense would be a great movie…… Sorry guys… (Anything to keep the books coming.)

BTW as far as I know there are several books before Killing Floor. Jack Reachers Rules, Second Son, High Heat, Deep Down, Small Wars, The Enemy, James Penny’s new Identity, Night School The Affair and then The Killing Floor.
Hello! Killing Floor was Lee Child’s debut novel, first published in 1997, and was the first book to star Jack Reacher. Lee has since gone on to write prequel stories delving into Reacher’s past, so if you’re reading chronologically you could start with those, but if you’re reading in the series order then Killing Floor is the place to begin 🙂

Heard talk that they are planning to change actors from Tom Cruise. The current actor that I see as Jack Reacher….. Liev Schreiber. He just looks like a loner tough guy and is closer in size at 6’3″. I thought that even before I heard they were looking to change.
Never thought Tom Cruise was the correct person for the role especially knowing his true size at about 5’7″. after reading the books, it just did not seem to fit. Not that Cruise is great in other movies he has done. this one just did not seem to work for me.

Hello! No Middle Name is included in this list, but separately at the end since it’s not a novel and is a compilation of lots of short stories that were all published previously at different times so it doesn’t fit into the normal ‘order’ 🙂

Hello! Running Blind is the title for the US edition – this book is called The Visitor here. Second Son is a short story included in No Middle Lane which features at the end of this list.
Second time around for me, the best and gripping stories i have read. Definitely books you can’t put down once started. Give us more Lee.

i have read all the reacher stories except for past tense. I am in fact reading them again. enjoy them very much. as a 30 year vet I can relate to the places and feelings in the stories.
I have read and thoroughly enjoyed twenty-one books in the series. I also passed them to my son who introduced me to Jack Reacher.
There is no way that Tom Cruise is Jack Reacher! I do not decry him as an actor because he is good in what he does but the story is spoilt for me because the actor is wrong.

My thought about the choice of actor as well. I would think someone like Russell Crowe would be more the type.

I am a huge fan of Reacher and have read all the Reacher novels at least twice over the last 10 years. Lee Child’s creation of the Reacher character is genius. But the selection of Tom Cruise to play the part in movies does not work for me. Tom is too small stature and he does not portray the same personality. My question is novel #4. My copy is entitled “Running Blind”. Is this the same as “Past Tense” or is the latter another novel?
Hello! The title of the fourth book in the series was changed in the US – it’s called The Visitor here. Past Tense is Lee Child’s brand new book to be released later this year. 🙂

If you love these books please look out for and read the Mitch Rapp books. I personally prefer the character to Reacher. I promise you, if you like Jack, you’ll like Mitch!!!
Rapp is a good character but no one better than Reacher ?
I Have read 3 books which i had from a charity shop on recommendation and am totally hooked. just ordered 5 more and excited in anticipation.

When I was reading my first Jack Reacher book by Lee Child, someone told me I would become obsessed by the series of books…….I didn’t believe it at the time, but I’m here to say I’m a believer now!! The first book was read about 4 months ago…….since then, I have read 22 of the Reacher books. I am TRULY OBSESSED and wonder how I will ever pick up another random book at the library and not consider it a piece of fluff after being introduced to these deeply engrossing stories!

Always enjoyed Lee Child’s books…..until Make Me. I found it so gory that I have crossed Mr. Child off my “favorite authors” list and have vowed to never read another.
because of one book, he went from great to never again, wow!!! A little extreme there….
I agree that is a bit extreme. I did not care for Make Me either. But the books after that are good. I wouldn’t cross him off because of one book. Everyone one has at least one that people will not like.

I love the books and like the movies.
Tom Cruise is not our book jack reacher, he is the movie Reacher, different. IMO he plays so well that, despite not making total sense, good entertainment is being created.
I’m looking forward to the next book and the next movie.
I have not watched the films for that reason. How can a slight shirt person ever live up to the description of Jack Reacher.

Please keep Reacher alive so I can continue following his exploits with your pen. He’s the cowboy in the white hat that we all want to be.

Such an easy read. I have only just started reading these books and like the rest, i find them hard to put down! Now i’m struggling a bit, as i have been reading about three books a week, which is annoying as i have had to slow down to only reading when i go to bed and now only read one book a week. Mr Child’s! You need an army of writers to keep up the demand! I’m on the kast book and do not wish to finish it…..but i do! Want to know what happens!!!!

Totally agree on the Roy Grace comment, excellent. Just to put it out there, my three favourites, in no particular order, Jack Reacher, Roy Grace and Harry Bosch.
