Harrogate Crime Festival Highlights 2014

Every year we mark the third weekend of July with a big red circle. Why? Well it’s The Theakstons Old Peculiar Crime Writing Festival in Harrogate, that’s why! Harrogate is the biggest crime writing festival in Europe and in its eleventh year so they’re old hands at putting on a festival of delights. This year’s chair Steve Mosby has put a programme together that will be the envy of every other festival in town.

There’s just too many excellent events to choose from this year, with special guest events from Ann Cleeves, Peter May, Denise Mina, Val McDermid, Lynda LaPlante, Sophie Hannah, SJ Watson, Laura Lippman AND ROBERT GALBRAITH! So we’ve decided to pull out some of the events that we think are particularly unmissable (although they all are really!)

Here are our highlights.

1. The Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year and Festival Opening Party.
Kicking off the festival on Thursday night this starts festivities with a bang! Hosted by Mark Lawson, the winner of the Crime Novel of the Year will be announced. There’ll be speeches a plenty and lots of authors to talk to. Denise Mina has scooped the accolade for the last two years – who will be this year’s winner?

2. Turning to Crime
At noon on Friday, Mark Lawson graces the stage again to take on the subject of turning to crime. With fellow panellists including Tony Parsons and Sarah Pinborough, this can’t fail to be an interesting discussion on the crime genre as a whole.

3. Special Guest Event: Robert Galbraith in Conversation with Val McDermid
The biggest headliner in town, Robert Galbraith a.k.a. J.K. Rowling hits the stage at 7:30pm on Friday to talk about new novel The Silkworm. We’re pleased to see the return of Cormoran Strike and can’t wait to hear more about his next adventure and if there’s more crime in store from Rowling.

JK Rowling

4. Special Guest Event: Sophie Hannah In Conversation with SJ Watson
We couldn’t miss out the event we’re sponsoring now could we! On Saturday morning at 10:30am, Sophie Hannah and S.J. Watson will be discussing their novels and other projects. We’ve already had a sneak preview of the movie adaptation of Watson’s novel Before I Go To Sleep starring Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman and it was one hell of a film!

5. New Blood
One to always try and catch, chaired by Val McDermid who personally selects the featured books, New Blood is a chance to meet the rising stars of the future. Four debut novelists take to the stage to talk to Val about their debut novels. Always interesting, this year the panel is comprised of Eva Dolan, Ray Celestin, Helen Giltrow and Nicola White.

6. Special TV Event: Broadchurch!
Yes, Olivia Coleman will be there, yes, we will be dying with excitement in the front row and yes, we will be writing down every last word they say about the new series and reporting back!

DI Alec Hardy and DS Ellie Miller from Broadchurch
